The city of Ottawa gave her a yellow Buick convertible after her Olympic win, but she had to return it to keep her amateur status for the 1948 Games.
The verdict
Canada's sweetheart on ice, she was the first North American to win Olympic gold in figure skating (1948) and brought home every major championship that existed. Retired at 19 to turn pro, later moved to the States, but Canada never forgot her — she's literally on a postage stamp.
