He was laid off from his accounting job at Deloitte in April 2012 after nine months. Nine years later he was the lead of a Marvel movie.

The verdict

Born in Harbin, China, raised in Mississauga from age five. Worked as an accountant at Deloitte, got laid off, and pivoted to acting almost on a dare — a decade later he's Shang-Chi. Citizen, raised here, lived and worked here: real connections, just not the birth certificate. Ya no ya.
