Fun fact
Known as 'America's Sweetheart' in Hollywood's silent era, but she was actually born Gladys Louise Smith in Toronto.
The verdict
Born in Toronto in 1892, she became Hollywood's first true superstar and co-founded United Artists, but left Canada as a child when her widowed mother moved the family to the States for work. She never forgot her roots though โ Canada claimed her right back, and she's remembered as one of our earliest exports to make it big in the pictures.
