Her film Water (2005) was selected as Canada's official entry for the Academy Awards and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Moved to Canada in 1973 and built her entire celebrated filmmaking career here, directing the groundbreaking Elements Trilogy and other films that put Canadian cinema on the world stage.
